What does Barents Summer Games bring to Northern Norway?
The Barents Games are a further development of sports' Barents cooperation, which has a history of more than 80 years. Historically, the Barents Summer Games are organized with participants from the entire Barents region, i.e. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. This year, Russia is banned due to their ongoing war in Ukraine. In a full-scale Barents Summer Games, 15 different sports are contested, with 3 para sports in the 15-25 age group. The potential for the number of participants is over 1150 participants + guests. This year, 10 individual sports and around 600 young people will meet in Tromsø, as well as leaders, judges, coaches and other guests.
The local sports teams in Tromsø will be the technical organizers of the competitions, while BSCN in collaboration with Troms and Finnmark sports circuit is responsible for the rest of the event. Tromsø sportscouncil will also have an important role in the event committee.
Grateful for the support
We in the project committee are proud to be able to bring about a Barents Summer Games in Tromsø, in 2022, despite all the challenges both nationally and internationally. It is important for young people and sports in general, that we can organize and bring together the Barents countries in what is both an engaging, inspiring but also unifying event. This year, the event will take place in Tromsø and we have high expectations that it will turn out well. A total of 10 sports are planned in which 600 participants will participate. The event- opening is Friday evening the 02. of September.
